Social Media for Travel and Tourism




Today the Social media has revolutionized the world of tourism and travel, and made the life easy for tourists and travelers. There’s no denying that social media has had a dramatic impact on the way we experience the world around us. There are few industries, however, for which it has presented such a significant marketing opportunity as that of tourism.
Today’s travelers go on line to research their future travel destination and accommodation.
For starters, travel is one of the most shared topics on “The Big 3” social networks (Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram).


People have always loved sharing photos and videos taken of their travels. What social media has done is to facilitate and expand people’s ability to share travel experiences with a wider audience than ever before. Over 97% of millennia share photos and videos of their travels online.
This trend hasn’t gone unnoticed. Many hotels and resorts have turned to running social contests and campaigns to ensure that they get some credit for their guests’ social activity. Kempton Hotels and Restaurants used guests’ wedding photos instead of staged, professional photographs to market their wedding venues. The campaign encouraged guests to take photos.

More and more people are turning to traditional social networks to ask for support when planning their upcoming adventure. Documenting travel with smartphones and high-quality DSLR cameras has never been easier. Travel photos and videos are among the most popular types of content shared online, and the most popular places to share these are on the top social networks.

In his 84 years, Thomas Edison acquired a record number of 1,093 patents (singly or jointly) and was the driving force behind such innovations as the phonograph, the incandescent light bulb and one of the earliest motion picture cameras. He also created the world’s first industrial research laboratory. Known as the “Wizard of Menlo Park,” for the New Jersey town where he did some of his best-known work, Edison had become one of the most famous men in the world by the time he was in his 30s. In addition to his talent for invention, Edison was also a successful manufacturer and businessman who was highly skilled at marketing his inventions–and himself–to the public.
Thomas Edison’s Early Life

Thomas Alva Edison was born on February 11, 1847, in Milan, Ohio. He was the seventh and last child born to Samuel Edison Jr. and Nancy Elliott Edison, and would be one of four to survive to adulthood. Thomas Edison received little formal education, and left school in 1859 to being working on the railroad between Detroit and Port Huron, Michigan, where his family then lived.

Did you know? By the time he died on October 18, 1931, Thomas Edison had amassed a record 1,093 patents: 389 for electric light and power, 195 for the phonograph, 150 for the telegraph, 141 for storage batteries and 34 for the telephone.

During the Civil War, Edison learned the emerging technology of telegraphy, and traveled around the country working as a telegrapher. He had developed serious hearing problems, which were variously attributed to scarlet fever, mastoiditis or a blow to the head. With the development of auditory signals for the telegraph, Edison was at a disadvantage, and he began to work on inventing devices that would help make things possible for him despite his deafness (including a printer that would convert the electrical signals to letters). In early 1869, he quit telegraphy to pursue invention full time.

What is the purpose of digital and social marketing?






The difference between digital marketing and social media is that social media is just one of the available channels of digital marketing. Many people believe that by engaging on social media they are doing digital marketing but this is not 100% true, as there are many more components that make up a digital marketing campaign.

What is Digital Marketing?
My definition of Digital marketing is: Building awareness and promoting a brand or product online using all available digital channels.

The major components of digital marketing are:

Internet Marketing – Website, SEM (search engine marketing – includes SEO and Pay per click advertising), smartphones, mobile markets (i.e. Google Play, Apple Store), email marketing, online banner advertising and Social Media.

Non-Internet digital channels – Television, Radio, SMS, digital billboards (indoor and outdoor)

What is social media?

Social media is the latest buzz word in Internet Marketing the last couple of years. The success of the new generation of social media platforms, mainly Facebook and Twitter, changed the way we socialize, interact and shop. This also brought new channels to digital marketing as well.

Social media is the term we use to describe platforms that bring people together for the exchange of information. The most popular social media platforms are: Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Pinterest, Instagram, Tumblr, LinkedIn, StumbleUpon and YouTube.
